University Park Library

Stone in the Park

Like a stone in the landscape, this library is carved from a cultural rock.
Weighted in a neighborhood park behind a grove of cherry blossoms, the bluestone clad building emerges from a modest slope, revealing only voids and a deeply in-set entrance. One aspires vertically towards a daylit reading room, whose walls hold the book collection. The stacks surround one, blocking all views out of the room. The spatial narrative concludes at a exterior reading room, framing Skinner’s Butte beyond.
