dear granny

granny flat residence | san diego . ca | 2009

This accessory dwelling unit was designed for a widowed family member.  Inspired from the act of weathering, the house is clad in burnt siding, a gesture towards the impermanence we all share.  The burning symbolizing San Diego’s struggle to control the natural world.

The L-shaped plan shapes a courtyard, with a solitary tree, where one is protected and connected to the simple things in life.
