Shell Within | Our Mother of Confidence

Known as the “dog of the diocese”, this was a revitalizing renovation of an existing 1960′s Catholic Church. The solution was to build a new building within the old, adding more programmatic spaces, and allowing daylight to penetrate its depths. My responsibility was the ceiling, the sacred plane that connects the ground to the sky. Inspired by “God’s fingers” and the baroque architecture of Borromini, the ceiling is a forever changing event, like one’s experience with God. Through the introduction of hidden skylights, light descends between folds in the clouds, an experience that is always new, shaped by the weather and time of day.
